Part 2, Chapter 25 Summary: “Maevyth”

Content Warning: This section of the guide includes discussion of death, graphic violence, and rape.

Maevyth stands by Moros at the Banishing. Aleysia is brought out, nude, by guards. Sacton Crain announces Aleysia’s crime of sleeping with her uncle and then accuses Riftyn of sinning. Riftyn tries to run, but guards force him and Aleysia toward the archway. Maevyth grabs a torch to fend off Moros and the guards. She joins Aleysia and Riftyn at the archway, and the townspeople start chanting, “Witch.” One man charges at Maevyth with a pickaxe, and Maevyth imagines the symbol from Danyra’s hand and summons a pile of bones from her hand. She tells Aleysia to run into the forest.

Maevyth loses sight of Aleysia inside the forest. Fairy-like creatures called wickens attack Maevyth, ripping her clothes and biting her. Raivox appears and scares off the wickens, eating some of them, and then flies off.

Moros, who has followed them into the forest, catches Maevyth by the throat, but a giant creature with antlers grabs him. He gives it the white stones and offers to bring more. Maevyth finds Riftyn by a tree, and they watch the creature eat Moros whole and transform into him.
