A week after Rodrick’s party, Greg’s father notices that the bathroom door doesn’t lock anymore, and Rodrick panics and thinks his parents will figure out what happened. When the moment passes and Rodrick still hasn’t been caught, Greg starts to wonder if he might be able to tell their parents about the party without Rodrick knowing so that Rodrick will be grounded. Greg continues to converse with his French pen-pal Mamadou, and although Greg claims that he wants to adjust his attitude about Mamadou, he is quick to “correct” Mamadou’s English.
One night, Greg discovers that Rowley’s new babysitter is a nerdy high school kid named Leland. Leland teaches Greg and Rowley how to play a game called Magick and Monsters, a role-playing board game. Greg tells his mom all about the game, but she starts to worry that Leland is “teaching [Greg] and Rowley witchcraft” (118), so she decides to sit in on one of the games. When his mom decides to join the game, Greg complains that he can’t enjoy it anymore. Greg’s mom decides that she loves the idea of Magick and Monsters so much that she goes to the store and purchases a large amount of Magick and Monsters books.
